The Senior Systems and Security Engineer reports to the Manager IT Infrastructure and Security at Land, Buildings and Real Estate (LBRE) division at Stanford.
With minimal guidance, ensure and maintain the availability and integrity of servers and applications entrusted to LBRE-IT, maintain and improve LBRE's information security posture, and contribute to overall LBRE-IT Roadmap in the areas of Information Security, Unix applications as well as virtualization.
Design, develop, install, and maintain operating systems and applications software on Unix systems.
Resolve incidents with significant impact on the integrity of user data and systems.
Maintain ownership LBRE-IT asset inventory as well as implement and monitor necessary security controls for servers hosted by LBRE-IT.
Conduct data security reviews for new systems and serves as subject matter expert for the organization
Engage in long-term strategic planning with regard to systems development and integration, as well as Information Security.
Conceptualize and implement systems within broad technical or structural frameworks.
Act as project leader on large-scale computing projects in which strong technical, directional, and personal leadership is necessary; assign and oversee the work of other system administrators as needed.
Design, configure, implement, and maintain system security strategies, policies, and procedures.
Establish software/hardware standards and systems policies and procedures.
Engage in long-term strategic planning with regard to systems development and integration.
Perform capacity planning for system configuration, software services, network services, load distribution, and service interrelationships among computer systems.
Act as a technical expert or lead for local computer system administration.
Manage vendor relationships and cost effective hardware and software maintenance agreements with vendors.
Minimum Education and Experience Required
Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Solid Unix/Linux system administration skills required. Familiarity with contemporary technologies (e.g. Elasticsearch, docker) is expected. Working knowledge of GLusterFS as well as OpenBSD is a plus.
Comprehensive knowledge in formal and practical informations security is necessary. Working knowledge of information security management systems (e.g. ISO27001) as well as familiarity with intrusion detection systems (e.g. Carbon Black, Osssec) helpful.
Firm understanding of networking technologies including routing, firewall technology and VPN is expected.
Working knowledge of virtualization technologies (i.e. AWS and vmWare) expected.
Proven knowledge in the application of automation technologies (e.g. Ansible, Puppet) is expected. This also includes actual coding skills (e.g. python, bash).
Experience with complex multi-system platforms and vendors.
Experience coordinating multi-system and computing environments in independent computing facilities.
Experience developing/implementing a business continuation and disaster recovery plan.
Proven ability to develop appropriate plans to meet computing needs.
Expert ability to program in multiple programming languages in multiple operating systems.
Proven ability to lead and work on large/complex system deployment projects in a team environment.
Advanced knowledge of security trends and best practices.
Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other, grasp forcefully, use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21>40 pounds.
