The Office of Audit Services at the University of Michigan seeks a Senior IT Auditor to join our team of highly qualified and service-oriented internal auditors. This client-facing position is responsible for performing and reporting on the results of IT Audits, reviews, advisory projects, and special assignments.

  • Plans, designs, and performs reviews of technology systems or processes at the Ann Arbor, Flint, and Dearborn campuses and at Michigan Medicine.
    • Perform examinations to assess adherence to university standards and accepted standards (NIST, FERPA) as well as a review of systems for confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
    • Review for security, adequacy of controls, effectiveness, efficiency, compliance with legal requirements, and consistency with management objectives.
  • Performs all phases of the audit process, including communication with clients, audit planning and scope, audit programs, fieldwork, review of deliverables and workpapers, and writing the audit report.
  • Evaluates governance, risks, and controls for the university's IT environment, the effectiveness of IT operations, safeguarding of assets and compliance with applicable rules and regulations using industry standard control frameworks.
  • Proactively keeps the associate director informed of the progress of audit reviews.
  • Assists with the support and maintenance of audit management tools.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.

The ideal candidate is a highly experienced, independent, proactive, self-starter with a strong work ethic, a high degree of motivation and integrity, and the ability to contribute to a positive team attitude.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in management information systems, accounting, computer science, or equivalent
  • Relevant information technology experience and/or audit experience in a distributed and sophisticated information technology environment
  • Demonstrated expertise related to information systems auditing, including understanding security and control risks in the areas of logical and physical security, access controls, change management, data security, recovery and continuity practices, and networking technology.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing complex data, evaluating information and systems, drawing logical conclusions, and working collaboratively.
  • Working knowledge of information technology and security best practices, control frameworks, business process mapping, and risk and controls identification.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of the concepts of internal controls in an IT context and risk assessment. However, inquisitive individuals with strong IT technical skills who are willing to learn auditing, are also encouraged to apply.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively as a team member in a diverse work group and the wider university community.
  • Work environment is a combination of on-campus and remote work. Candidates must live within commuting distance from Ann Arbor.  Reliable internet and a quiet, confidential workspace are necessary to work remotely.

Desired Qualifications

  • Graduate degree
  • Applied knowledge of the NIST cybersecurity frameworks
  • Applied knowledge of the Center of Internet Security (CIS) recommended controls
  • Applied knowledge of security tools, vulnerability scanning, and penetration testing
  • Experience with data analytic software, such as ACL, IDEA, BusinessObjects, and Tableau
  • Knowledge of higher education operations, university systems and data, and other compliance/regulatory requirements
  • CISA, CIA, CISSP, or other relevant certification
