Principal Business Intelligence Engineer - University Information Systems - Georgetown University
The Principal BI Engineer is responsible for the analysis of University-wide information system requirements, development of specifications, programming, and writing system documentation. They provide technical support for analysis, design, implementation and maintenance of enterprise data management applications; and use operational and functional knowledge of all aspects of the application, including all external interactions and internal processes, to develop alternatives to customization of purchased systems where possible, or to design and implement appropriate modifications where required. Their specific responsibilities include application of vendor maintenance, quality control management and oversight of change control processes, and analysis of requirements.
The Principal BI Engineer is a Team Lead and reports to the Manager of the appropriate application(s), to a Project Manager, or to the Associate Director. They may serve as a member of one or more project teams, with additional reporting line to that project's manager. Although they have no direct reports, they may be responsible for teaching, coaching, and mentoring other team members.
They are expected to work within and across teams to support the acquisition of new skills and areas of expertise; and to apply proven communication, analytical and problem solving skills in order to produce timely, efficient and high quality deliverables.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certification
Bachelor's degree Computer Science, MIS or related computing intensive field
5 or more years of relevant experience in maintenance and design of relevant enterprise systems, preferably in a higher education environment
Expertise in data management technologies (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, advanced SQL coding, relational database design, and data warehousing)
Experience developing data pipelines using Big Data technologies and distributed data processing (Google Big Query, Dataflow, Apache Beam, Git, and Python)
Knowledge of best practice development standards for database design, programming and architecture
Experience with student and accounting/financial data, reporting and processes; experience developing and maintaining enterprise data warehouse systems/tools - for example, Cognos, Google Cloud Platform (GCP)); experience with environment and development tools - for example, Oracle, SQR/SQL, SAS, Java, Control-M, and CA Endevor); and experience developing and maintaining Ellucian Banner and Workday Financials and Human Resources or similar enterprise applications
Experience with accounting/financial data, reporting and processes
Ability to rapidly adapt to changing business requirements and to efficiently acquire and utilize new skills in response to such change
Availability and willingness to accommodate an 'on-call' component in which team members rotate through providing support for the applications they manage outside of the regular business hours
Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills
Ability to build and use effective working relationships within their own department and across line, functional and geographic reporting lines
Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills in order to produce timely, efficient and high quality deliverables
Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills
Commitment to fostering an inclusive environment and working with diverse and dynamic teams
