DESCRIPTIONUnder the general direction of the Senior Associate Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs (SAVC-AA), the Assistant Vice Chancellor-Academic Personnel (Asst VC-AP) manages the overall academic personnel services program for UC San Diego. The Asst VC-AP develops strategies to manage academic personnel issues, programs, policies and/or procedures that are responsive to needs of the campus within the context of institutional goals and objectives. The Asst VC-AP serves as the UC San Diego campus representative for Academic Personnel issues to the University of California Office of the President and plays an active role in representing campus interests. The Asst VC-AP administers policy for all academic personnel and has authority to act on behalf of the SAVC-AA and the Executive Vice Chancellor (EVC). The incumbent manages the operations of Academic Personnel Services units, setting direction and establishing priorities for Academic Advancement & Compensation, Office of Academic Recruitments, Academic Employee & Labor Relations, Academic Policy, Academic Process & Training, and Academic Data & Compensation Initiatives. The Asst VC-AP acts as key advisor to organization's senior administration on all academic personnel and programs matters, and operates with considerable independence in providing leadership, planning, and delivery of services. Participates with other senior managers to establish strategic plans and objectives. Makes recommendations and / or decisions on academic personnel and programs matters and ensures achievement of objectives. Responsible for managing and directing organization-wide programs. Reviews and approves recommendations for operational planning and control. This position has significant influence on the success of academic personnel and academic programs, and the mitigation of institutional risk. Erroneous decisions will have a serious impact on the overall success of academic personnel and academic programs on the organization. Has organization-wide and systemwide responsibilities for policies and procedures across all organization jurisdictions, including schools and colleges with multiple and varied departments, organized research units, and centers and control units. The UC San Diego academic organization includes 12 schools, three divisions, eight undergraduate colleges, the Library, University Extension and ~35 organized research units with over 11,000 faculty and other academic personnel on the general campus (Academic Affairs, including the Division of Extended Studies and University Library), at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and in the UC San Diego Health System.
