Position Summary
The Director of Information Technology provides strategic and operational leadership of all technology functions within the firm. This role is responsible for ensuring secure, reliable, and innovative systems that support attorneys and staff in delivering exceptional legal services. The Director oversees all infrastructure, applications, cybersecurity, help desk operations, vendors, and technology projects, with a strong focus on legal?industry systems, compliance, and client?service expectations. This position requires a minimum of 10 years of progressive IT experience, including leadership responsibilities and demonstrated success in a professional services—ideally law firm—environment.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Planning
Develop and execute the firm’s technology strategy to support business goals and attorney productivity.
Plan and manage the firm’s technology budget, including capital expenditures, licensing, and vendor contracts.
Identify opportunities to leverage emerging technologies to improve efficiency, security, and client service.
Lead long-term infrastructure planning to ensure scalability, business continuity, and performance.
Technology Operations Management
Oversee daily IT operations, ensuring high availability and optimal performance of all systems.
Manage the IT support team, ensuring timely and effective resolution of technical issues across all offices.
Maintain documentation, standard operating procedures, and quality controls for all technology functions.
Ensure regular testing, maintenance, and upgrades of hardware, software, and networks.
Legal Technology Systems
Direct administration and optimization of law?firm–specific systems including Document Management Systems (iManage, NetDocuments).
Oversee Practice Management, Time & Billing, and Accounting systems (Surepoint, Aderant, Elite 3E).
Manage litigation support tools, e?discovery platforms, and trial presentation technology.
Partner with attorneys and department leaders to understand workflow needs and recommend solutions.
Lead system integrations, data management initiatives, and process improvements.
Cybersecurity & Risk Management
Serve as the firm’s primary leader for cybersecurity, risk mitigation, and compliance.
Implement and maintain security frameworks aligned with client requirements and industry standards.
Maintain robust disaster recovery and business continuity plans, including regular testing.
Oversee security awareness training for attorneys and staff.
Vendor & Project Management
Manage relationships with technology vendors, consultants, and service providers.
Lead major technology projects from planning through implementation and post?deployment support.
Negotiate contracts and evaluate technology products and services for cost-effectiveness and strategic alignment.
Leadership & Collaboration
Provide coaching, development, and performance management for IT staff.
Foster a collaborative, service-oriented culture within the IT department.
Communicate effectively with firm leadership, attorneys, and staff regarding technology initiatives.
Support onboarding and training programs to ensure effective use of firm systems.
Training and Skill Development
Design, implement, and oversee a comprehensive technology training program for attorneys and staff.
Conduct regular training sessions on core legal software, including document management, time and billing, practice management, and collaboration platforms.
Work closely with HR and training personnel to assess skill gaps and develop targeted learning plans to improve proficiency and adoption of new technologies.
Partner with department leaders to understand workflow needs and tailor training programs accordingly.
Develop user-friendly documentation, quick?reference guides, and onboarding materials.
Lead firm-wide technology onboarding for new hires and lateral attorneys.
Promote continuous improvement through new training tools and best practices.
Monitor usage patterns and training outcomes to refine training programs.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field required; advanced degree or certifications preferred.
10+ years of progressive IT experience, including at least 5 years in a supervisory or management capacity.
Prior experience in a law firm or professional services organization strongly preferred.
Technical Skills
Expertise in Microsoft 365, Windows Server environments, networking, virtualization (VMware/Hyper?V), and cloud technologies.
Strong understanding of legal?industry applications including Document Management Systems (NetDocuments), Time & Billing (Surepoint), Litigation Support tools (DISCO), and PDF/document tools (Kofax).
Experience with cybersecurity technologies, frameworks, and best practices.
Knowledge of disaster recovery planning and business continuity management.
