Position Summary
The Director of Safety & Security / Assistant Director of Facilities & Campus Operations is a key operational leader responsible for overseeing campus safety and security, transportation, and event logistics while supporting the broader facilities and operations portfolio of the School. This role ensures a safe, secure, and well-coordinated campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
In addition to managing the Safety & Security Department, this position partners closely with the Director of Facilities & Campus Operations on daily operations, planning, staffing, and project execution—and serves as Acting Director when the Director is off-campus.
Essential Responsibilities
1.Campus Safety & Security Leadership
· Develop, implement, and oversee the strategic vision and associated policies and procedures for campus safety and security.
· Serve as the primary point of contact for all security matters, including threat assessments, emergency response, and coordination with county police and public safety agencies.
· Supervise security staff, oversee scheduling, ensure appropriate campus coverage, and design ongoing professional training.
· Manage and review surveillance systems, access control systems, and visitor management protocols.
· Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments, and internal investigations when appropriate.
· Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local safety regulations.
· Maintain strong relationships with community partners, including law enforcement, fire, and EMS.
2.Emergency Preparedness & Crisis Response
· Lead the development and ongoing refinement of emergency response and crisis management plans.
· Coordinate campus-wide drills (fire, lockdown, evacuation) and faculty/staff/student training.
· Oversee emergency communications systems and collaborate with Technology and Communications on system reliability and messaging protocols/programs.
3.Event Logistics & Campus Use Management
· Coordinate event logistics across academic, athletic, arts, advancement, and auxiliary programs.
· Ensure proper staffing, security, parking, and traffic flow plans for high-profile or large-scale events.
· Oversee event setup and breakdown in collaboration with custodial, maintenance, and operations staff.
· Manage weather contingency planning for events in partnership with School leadership.
4.Transportation Oversight
· In collaboration with the Transportation Manager, ensure the effective daily operations of the school’s transportation services, including driver scheduling/supervision and vehicle coordinator for school programs.
· Oversees the school’s bus fleet, including maintenance and repairs, route effectiveness, budgeting and procurement, and safety/compliance.
· Ensure compliance with vehicle safety, inspection, and training requirements.
· Manage traffic control operations for drop-off, pick-up, and special events.
5.Facilities & Operations Support
· Support the Director of Facilities & Campus Operations in day-to-day oversight of maintenance, grounds, custodial, housing, and logistics operations.
· Assist with work order management, follow-up inspections, scheduling, and staff coordination.
· Support vendor oversight, contractor scheduling, and small capital projects as needed.
· Serve as Acting Director of Facilities & Campus Operations when the Director is off campus.
· Assist in budget development and ongoing management related to all safety, security, and operational functions.
6. Community Engagement & Training
· Build strong, positive relationships with students, faculty, parents, and staff to promote a culture of safety and belonging.
· Provide training to faculty and staff on emergency procedures, incident response, and campus safety expectations.
· Serve as a visible presence on campus, modeling professionalism and calm under pressure.
RequiredQualifications
· Minimum 5 years of experience in law enforcement, military, or a related field, with specific experience in security leadership.
· Demonstrated leadership experience and ability to supervise diverse operational teams.
· Extensive knowledge of security systems, emergency protocols, and risk management.
· Eligibility for SRO or SPO commission in Maryland preferred.
· Active Shooter/ALICE or similar certification.
· Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments.
· Ability to manage multiple operational functions in a fast-paced school environment.
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience in facilities, transportation oversight, event operations, or campus operations.
· Experience in an independent school or higher-education environment.
· Bachelor’s degree and/or related experience in public safety, operations, criminal justice, or a related field.
· Experience with logistic management systems.
